Ofcom announces 4G spectrum winners in the UK, snags less cash than expected

Ofcom announces 4G spectrum winners in the UK, snags less cash than expected

UK regulator Ofcom has revealed the winners of its 4G spectrum auction after more than 50 rounds of bidding: EE, Hutchison 3G (Three), BT subsidiary Niche Spectrum Ventures, Telefonica (O2) and Vodafone. It wasn't all good news however, as the agency revealed the auction only roped in £2.4 billion pounds, less than the £3.5 billion it had anticipated. Left on the outside looking in? MLL Telecom and HKT Company. Interestingly enough it was Vodafone -- headed by CEO Vittorio Colao who famously suggested only "technofreaks" were into 4G speed -- that spent the most.

The idea is to spread high speed wireless across "almost the whole" UK population by 2017 at the latest, and the auction's intent was to create more competition in the space. Telefonica UK specifically is required to provide indoor reception to at least 98 percent of the population by then, as a condition of its bid. As seen above, the available 250MHz of spectrum was auctioned off in two separate bands, 800MHz (ideal for expanded coverage and freed up by the digital TV transition) and 2.6GHz more suited to high speed data connections. So what's next? You guessed it -- another round of bidding, to determine where in each band the winners spectrum lies, before services roll out in spring or summer of this year. Hit the source link to check out the full results for yourself and prepare for the 5G battle, expected to commence sometime after 2018.

Sony reveals PlayStation 4, fires first shot in the next console war

Featured

After months of rumor and speculation, Sony has revealed its new game machine ? the PlayStation 4 ? as well as a new controller with a touchpad, a "share" button and light bar.

"Today marks a moment of truth and a bold step forward for PlayStation as a company," said Andrew House, president and Group CEO of Sony Computer Entertainment, as he took the stage at the Hammerstein Ballroom in New York City on Wednesday. "Today we will give you a glimpse into the future of play."

House told a room packed full of journalists that the new machine ? the successor to the PlayStation 3 ? would take the moniker PlayStation 4. Sony then revealed the new touch-sensing DualShock controller as well as a new "stereo camera" that works in conjunction with the controller (see video below.)

Sony said the PlayStation 4 will launch "holiday 2013" but did not reveal a specific date or a price. Sony also did not show off what its new gaming hardware will look like, revealing only the controller and pictures of the new camera.

Mark Cerny, the PS4's lead system architect, did outline some of the innards that will be powering the machine explaining, ?The architecture we chose is like a PC in many ways.?

He said the PlayStation 4 will feature an X86 CPU and a whopping 8 gigabytes of unified system memory. (For more on that, check out our story here.)

David Perry ? CEO and founder of Gaikai ? also took the stage Wednesday. Sony bought his game streaming company last year. He explained that integration of the streaming service with the PlayStation Store will allow gamers to instantly try games before they buy them.

Meanwhile, Perry said that with the "share" button on the new PS4 controller players will be able to live broadcast their gameplay to their PlayStation Network friends.

He said friends will not only be able to watch your game in action, but can post comments to your screen as you play (if you let them). You'll also be able to allow friends to take over your game so they can, say, assist you in a difficult area or interact with your game in other helpful ways.

"What we?re creating is the fastest, most powerful network for gaming in the world," Perry said. "Our vision is to create the first social gaming network with meaning."

Perry also revealed Remote Play ? a feature that will allow gamers to take their PS4 action to Sony's smaller game screen. That is, if you're in the middle of playing a game on your PS4, you can use Remote Play to instantly transfer your game to Sony's handheld PS Vita.

Perry said the ultimate goal is to make it so all PS4 games will be playable on the Vita.

So what games will be coming to the PlayStation 4? Bungie ? the creator of the Xbox-exclusive Halo game franchise ? revealed it will be bringing its newly revealed project "Destiny" to the PlayStation 4 (with an edition also for the PlayStation 3).

Hermen Hulst, co-founder of Guerrilla Games, introduced "Killzone: Shadowfall" a stunning looking futuristic shooter. And Matt Southern from Evolution Studios showed off the ultra-realistic "Drive Club" racing game.

"We?ve gone borderline insane with the real-world details," Southern said, pointing out the ultra-fine detail that can be seen on the cars in the game.

Meanwhile, Sucker Punch's Nate Fox revealed the new game from the studio that brought us the "InFamous" series. He said "InFamous" Second Son" ? a game about what happens when super powers and the power of surveillance collide ? will be a PlayStation 4 exclusive.

Respected indie developer Jonathan Blow ? the creator of the critically acclaimed game "Braid" ? showed off his next game "The Witness." He said the puzzle-filled title will be a PlayStation 4 "launch window" game.

Ubisoft's Yves Guillemot revealed what everyone expected ? that the developer's highly anticipated game of surveillance and hacking called "Watch Dogs" is planned for the next-gen PlayStation 4.

In something of a surprise, PC gaming stalwart Blizzard revealed that it'll be bringing "Diablo 3" to both the PlayStation 4 and the PlayStation 3.

And it appears that Sony won?t be saying goodbye to its oft-ignored PlayStation Move motion controller. Media Molecule ? the developers behind the ?LittleBigPlanet? games ? showed off a tool that enables players to use the Move controller and the PS4 to craft digital sculptures and bring them to life.

Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo have been duking it out for years, vying to be the prime purveyor of home video games and, in recent years, other home entertainment as well. But Sony's news today is the opening shot in an all new console war.

It's been six years since Sony launched the PlayStation 3 and seven years since Microsoft launched its competing Xbox 360. Late last year, Nintendo revealed the Wii U ? its new home game machine and the successor to the Wii. But so far, the Wii U's lackluster sales and technical specs that make it seem more on par with the current generation Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, suggest this machine is more of an interim step in the three-way gaming battle.

With Microsoft rumored to be working on its own new home game console (which it will reportedly unveil in the coming weeks), it is Sony and Microsoft that are widely expected to go head-to-head in the coming years, vying for the same demographic and to become the all-important entertainment hub in your household.

MOS Magnetic Cable Organizer Magnetizes Your Cords and Holds Them Anywhere

MOS Magnetic Cable Organizer Magnetizes Your Cords and Holds Them AnywhereA number of cables stick to magnets automatically, but some need a little help to stay put. The MOS Magnetic Cable organizer adds magnet clips to your cables for easier identification and so they quickly attach to a metal base plate for quick access.

The MOS organizer doesn't take much effort to set up: you just clip little magnet tags onto the cables that need them (e.g. an micro-USB cable and not a MagSafe cable), then lay the tagged cable on the metal base. It'll stick around, nicely organized, until you decide to just gently remove it for use.

Want a DIY version? While it won't add extra magnetic pull to your cables like the MOS' clips, this magnetic binder clip hack costs very little to implement and serves a similar purpose. It's definitely worth a look if you don't want to spend the money.

The Filibuster Solution, Or 'What If Honeybees Ran The U.S. Senate?'

Bees are democrats. They vote. When a community of bees has to make a choice, like where to build a new hive, they meet, debate and decide. But here's what they don't do: they don't filibuster. No single bee (or small band of bees) will stand against the majority, insisting and insisting for hours. They can't.

Bee biology prevents it.

U.S. Senators, listen up here. According to Professor Tom Seeley, an entomologist at Cornell University, a hive will send a few hundred "scouts" into a back yard, or into the woods, to find a good nest site. If a particular scout thinks that an elm tree ? that one over there ? is the best place to build a hive, she will say so, by dancing. Her dance will tell the other bees where to find that special tree ...

If she feels really strongly, she will dance with extra energy, for a longer time.

Even if most of the other bees have chosen a different tree, they won't stop her dance, or tell her to be quiet. Or have three-fifths of them invoke "cloture," a fancy way of saying "shut up." They will wait her out.

Then something astonishing happens. I've written about it before, but I want to mention it again, now that our Senators are mulling their next filibuster, because what bees do makes democracy much, much easier ? or so it seems.

Different scouts will dance for their different trees. Gradually, a favorite emerges. But what if a particular bee is totally convinced that the tree she has found is so superior that she just keeps dancing and dancing, and won't stop? How does the hive handle a stubborn bee?

The Jimmy Stewart Bee

"We haven't seen any bees like that," Professor Seeley said. None? None, he told me. "In the world of scout bees, you don't have die-hard bees that just dance and dance and dance forever." Why not?

Because, he said, even if a bee feels very, very strongly about her choice and has danced feverishly for as long as she could, once she's done ? and no bee can dance forever ? she apparently stops caring.

Her enthusiasm drains out of her ? Imagine Jimmy Stewart, the young Senator in Mr. Smith Goes To Washington making one glorious big speech, and then plopping down in his chair, dull and blank as a piece of chalk.

The 'Retire And Rest' Hypothesis

That, says Professor Seeley, is what happens to scout bees. They've "voted," they've danced. The other bees are free to visit her tree and see for themselves. But now that she's done her part, her sense of urgency dribbles away. She stops campaigning ...

... and no longer champions her cause. When the decision is made, she will go with the majority choice, whatever it turns out to be. It's not like she's giving up. She's probably wired this way.

As Professor Seeley puts it, there may be "an internal, neurophysiological process that causes every scout to gradually and automatically lose her motivation to dance for a site, even one that is high in quality."

And this is built in?

"[It's] built in," says Seeley. He calls this his Retire and Rest hypothesis. "And when you think about it," he says, "that works really well."

Well, if "working well" means getting rid of fractious, irritating bees who frustrate the majority, hobble government, paralyze the system, then yup, the absence of passion works wonderfully.

But what if that irritating bee is right? What if her tree is the better site?

That can happen, but generally, says Professor Seeley, bee hives choose well. In his book Honeybee Democracy, he says given the array of choices, most hives avoid disastrous sites and choose pretty good ones. So the system works ? for bees.

So would we be better off being more beelike?

Each of us would be free to choose, free to express his choice, free to gather, but once we voted, we'd lose our passion. No resenting the winners. No scheming. No grumbling. No sabotage. No filibusters. We'd go with the flow.

To some degree, we do that already. Democrats suffered through eight long years of Bush. Republicans are now plodding through eight long years of Obama. The difference is, if we were bees, we wouldn't suffer. We'd just cooperate. Automatically.

Biologically-induced congeniality sounds like a nice alternative to what we've got now, a spitting, snarling mosh pit of politicians. But even so, I don't wish a bee lobotomy on our senators.

Yes, they are petty, shortsighted blowhards too much of the time. Some have lost the art of compromise. But would I prefer the bee model? A polite, genetically induced quiet? No, I wouldn't.

I see the advantages, but speaking as an intelligent, free willed mammal, I'm afraid their system seems a little ... umm, what's the word?

Inhuman.

In 2011, I spoke with Professor Seeley on Morning Edition, and if you want to hear that interview and listen to bees debating (the "bees" courtesy of jazz violinist Mazz Swift-Camlet) just click here, then on the "listen" button. The bee drawings ? which I'm reprising from the 2011 post ? come from NPR's very own reporter, composer, illustrator and honorary bee, Adam Cole.

Report: Harrison Ford to reprise Han Solo role in new ?Star Wars? film

By The Guardian

By Andrew Pulver, The Guardian

Actor?s reprisal of Han Solo role in forthcoming Star Wars sequels is ?done deal?, according to Latino News blogger

Harrison Ford has committed to appear as Han Solo in the forthcoming series of Star Wars films to be produced by Disney, according to a??scoop? reported on Fox News Latino. Latino News columnist Umberto ?El Mayimbe? Gonzalez told interview Victor Garcia: ?Harrison Ford will reprise his role as Han Solo in the upcoming Star Wars movies. The deal is done. It?s huge.?

Gonzalez claimed he had ?triple checked? his ?legitimate sources?, and could not say whether Ford?s role would be a small cameo or something larger ? or even whether he would appear in Star Wars Episode VII, the forthcoming film to be directed by JJ Abrams.

Another insider-scoop blogger, Roger Friedman of showbiz411.com,?agreed with Gonzalez, asserting that he was ?told some time ago that Ford, Carrie Fisher and Mark Hamill would be reprising their roles? in Episode VII. He also claimed to have some plot details: ?It?s some time in the future. Han, Princess Leia (presumably with a better hairstyle) and Luke Skywalker will be a lot older. Their children will be the new main characters. R2D2 and C-3PO will be unchanged.?

Ford?s participation in the new set of Star Wars movies has been rumoured for some time, along with Hamill and Fisher; but given his fractious relationship with original creator George Lucas, Ford?s presence was by no means a certainty. He confirmed in 2010 he had?unsuccessfully pushed to have Han Solo killed off?in Return of the Jedi in an effort to ?supply some emotional bottom?.

90% Lore

All Critics (49) | Top Critics (15) | Fresh (44) | Rotten (5)

We know where this is going pretty early on, but that doesn't prevent "Lore" from being riveting stuff, start to finish.

This striking, slow-building drama ... uses fractured, impressionistic imagery as a mirror of moral dislocation as the children make their way through an unfamiliar landscape.

It's a remarkable accomplishment.

Saskia Rosendahl is a highly expressive actress within the limited confines of her character, and the film is studded with memorable scenes.

"Lore" is the sort of movie you'd already expect to rip your heart out, but that doesn't diminish the tragedy when it does arrive.

If "Lore" is an upsetting and uncomfortable film set in a morally bleak landscape, it also offers a guardedly optimistic vision of the possibility of human change.

Shortland creates a palpable sense of atmosphere, and coupled with fluid camerawork and a verdant forest backdrop, Lore looks and feels a world apart from other World War II-set dramas.

This oblique and understated tale of lost innocence conveys both an individual's experiences and a powerful sense of a ruined nation.

Shortland's measured pacing and hypnotic visuals make this a mesmerising journey through a defeated landscape.

The result is a stimulating portrayal of an under-examined aspect of Nazism's terrible legacy.

Enough cannot be said about its leading lady, a truly captivating actress at a very young age who should be an international star.

In the chaos of 3rd Reich's end. . .contemporizes the look and feel of overwhelmed, exhausted teens sifting through continuing lies and denials of the truths by everyone.

A strikingly accomplished film about worthless people.

Saskia Rosendahl, who plays Lore, is marvelous to watch.

A dark coming-of-age journey about a girl who may or may not be able to summon the character to survive in a way she can live with afterward.

(AP) ? Ten years after a deadly nightclub fire, some survivors and relatives of the 100 who died in the blaze remember it with quiet pain.

Huddled together in bitter cold, they brought flowers Sunday and paid their respects at handmade crosses that dot the site of the 2003 fire for each person who died. Some cried and spoke of missing their loved ones and the difficulty of moving past such trauma.

"It's just very tough," said Walter Castle Jr., 39, a survivor who suffered third-degree burns in his lungs, throat and bronchial tubes.

The anniversary of the blaze is Wednesday. The fire broke out when pyrotechnics for the rock band Great White ignited flammable packing foam that had been installed in the club as soundproofing.

Castle said he lost many friends and was in counseling until 2009. Recently, as the 10th anniversary approached, he began having terrible nightmares and had to go back into counseling.

"People that weren't here really don't understand why we can't let this stuff go. I was 30 seconds away from dying," he said.

Last month, a fire at a nightclub in Brazil killed more than 230 people under circumstances that were eerily similar: A band's pyrotechnic display set fire to soundproofing foam.

Among those who spoke Sunday was former Gov. Don Carcieri, who took office the month before the fire and still gets choked up when speaking about it. He remembered the days families waited at a hotel for word that their loved ones' remains had been identified, and the anger everyone felt, asking how the tragedy could have happened. But he also remembered how people in Rhode Island, a state with a population of just 1 million, pulled together to help each other.

"At a time of our state's worst tragedy, in some sense, it was our people's finest hour," he said.

Angela Bogart, who was 19 when her mother, Jude Henault, was killed in the fire, said she has come to know and understand her mother more in the decade since she died, especially since she has become a mother herself.

"My mom lives in me in everything I do. I hear her voice wherever I go," she said. "When I walk hand-in-hand with my little girl, my mother is holding her other hand."

The ceremony also featured musical performances, a reading of the names of the people who died and 100 seconds of silence.

While somber, the annual gathering at the fire site took on a more hopeful tone this year than in years past because a foundation set up to build a permanent memorial secured ownership of the site in September after years of trying. On Sunday, the Station Fire Memorial Foundation released final plans for the memorial.

They call for a 30-foot-high entrance gate topped by an Aeolian harp. Wind passing through the harp will create music, a reminder that it was music that brought people together that night.

The permanent memorial will include an individual memorial for each person who died and commemorate the survivors, first responders and those who helped care for families of the dead and survivors in the weeks and months after the fire. It will also include a pavilion as a gathering place.

Families are being asked to remove the crosses and other personal mementos that have been left at the site at the makeshift memorial that has developed over the years. The items left behind will be buried in a capsule under an area that is now the parking lot. There will be no digging on the land under where the club once stood because of the fear of disturbing human remains.

While many of the materials and labor to build the memorial will be donated, foundation officials say they need to raise $1 million to $2 million to build and maintain it.

The foundation hopes to break ground in the spring. Construction of the memorial could take one to two years.

Gina Russo, who was badly burned in the fire and whose fianc? was killed, is president of the foundation and said the memorial would turn the site into something beautiful.

"It's a happy moment going forward," she said.

LinkedIn revamping Jobs tool to open more doors for workers

LinkedIn has some good news for job seekers. It is making it easier to find and get jobs using the online professional networking service.

According to the LinkedIn blog, over the next few weeks the company will begin rolling out the revamped Jobs tool, which will start showcasing open positions at companies where you have a first-degree connection ? an ?in? who can open doors for you at an organization that?s hiring.

This is a boon for anyone looking for work since who you know can be almost as important as what you know when it comes to landing a good job.

LinkedIn Jobs also will let you drill down deeper when performing an advanced search so you can find openings by country, zip code, industry and function as well as show you new results from your saved search parameters.

Click on the ?Jobs? tab and LinkedIn provides ?Jobs you may be interested in,? based on information you?ve included in your profile. It also lets you more easily track the jobs you?re most interested in with a ?Save Job? link that will keep those positions easily accessible on your Jobs page.

With more than 200 million users worldwide, LinkedIn is commonly used by employers and recruiters to research prospective employees, so if you?re serious about your career, there?s no excuse for not using it.

LinkedIn spokeswoman Erin O'Harra says it's important to include specific, significant results when you create your profile.

"If you closed a million-dollar deal or you recruited five key executives for your company, those are definitely the things you want to call out to distinguish yourself from others," she says.

She also says business-savvy users drill down and take advantage of the platform's deeper features.

For instance, if you haven?t already done so, make sure to claim your vanity profile URL, which you can post on other sites or networks to bring people back to your LinkedIn profile. To get one, on LinkedIn, go to Profile, Edit Profile, and then click to edit the URL directly under your profile photo. From there, click on ?Customize your public profile URL? on the right side of the page.

LinkedIn also has more than 1 million different Groups you can join. Using them is a good way to expand your network and can be good places where you can contribute thoughtful commentary and demonstrate your expertise in your given field.

6 Ways to Detoxify Your Heart | Care2 Healthy Living

This time of year, there is info everywhere on how to detoxify your body. Whatever toxin you want to remove, or part of your body you want to cleanse, there?s a smoothie for that! Now, I love smoothies, and I believe that physical detoxification is an essential health practice (especially by eliminating those toxins to begin with ? for my full views you can read Organic Manifesto and Demand Organic!). But I also believe that the most toxic toxins start in our hearts. And for true health, healing, and happiness that?s where we need to start. (By the way, I am not a therapist or doctor, just someone who has personal experience in this area).

The Power of Emotional Healing

Don?t numb it, FEEL it. This is the hardest and first step. How many different methods do we employ to avoid feeling what we really feel? Drugs and alcohol are the easiest ways to recognize the numbing effect. But we can also use food, TV, religion, sports, crafts, or just plain emotional repression. Yes, emotions can be truly painful, but it?s the pain of living, of personal growth, of healing. Let yourself feel what?s in your heart. Truly feel it. Find a safe place and let those feelings wash over you.

Do the forensics and unpeel the layers. Often, what we first think we are upset about isn?t the true thing that is bothering us. Our emotions come in layers. The first layer might be anger. I AM ANGRY!!!!!! But when you peel away the layers, what might truly be driving that is loneliness, or fear, or hurt. This is where talking with a therapist can really help. Sometimes it really helps to have someone help us dig out from under all those layers we?ve covered our hearts in. As a parent, I often find that when a child is cranky or annoyed, taking time out to sit and talk with them and help them get to the original feeling can be transformative and enlightening for everyone.

Ask the universe for guidance. Sometimes it can be really hard to get to the source of what is actually causing us pain or anger. When that happens, it helps to carve out some quiet time in nature and ask for help. The universe will often speak back through nature, through ?synchronicity,?? or through bringing you teachers, if you are open to it. Sometimes those teachers come in the form of a book, or a situation and suddenly you realize that yes, the universe DOES listen! That?s when detoxifying your heart starts to get fun, because it starts to feel like an adventure.

Replace fear with love. Easier said than done, right? Wrong. It?s easy. Whenever you feel fear, question it and the situation. Ask yourself, what would love feel like in this situation instead of fear? The world is filled with threats and meanness and angry people?but imagine the pain they must be feeling, the hurt in their hearts! It won?t get any better by adding to it. The key here is trying to see the world from the other person?s perspective. I think this gets easier as we age, since we now experience first-hand things our parents might have felt, for example. It?s like exercise, the more you do it, the easier it gets. And just like exercise, YOU are the ultimate beneficiary.

Let it out and let it go. This step requires action and the courage to act, but is key to the healing process. Once you have identified what is truly the toxin in your heart, the only way to get rid of it is to let it go. If there is something you need to say to someone. SAY IT. But say it with love. If there is something you need to do, a change you need to make, MAKE IT. But make it with love. If there is something you need to express, but don?t have the words, CREATE IT. But create it with love. Your job here is not to hurt someone else (although sometimes that happens), but to have them truly HEAR what you have to say. That doesn?t mean they will change. In fact, they most certainly won?t. But YOU WILL. You will feel better, lighter, happier, cleaner.DETOXIFIED!

Forgive yourself. Things will never be perfect. You will never be perfect. Other people certainly will never be perfect (especially me!). We will never eliminate every toxin ? and in fact, the toxins are there for a reason ? just like all that bacteria in our bodies and world that seems bad and dirty but in actuality we can?t live without. Every mistake, every wrong action happened. You can?t change it. All you can do is apologize to the other person/people and apologize to yourself and vow to learn and grow from it. That?s living. That?s life! And it?s beautiful in all it?s imperfections, even ours.

This is your Year of Daring Greatly!!

What Do We Know about the Russian Meteor?

Meteor researcher Margaret Campbell-Brown recaps the latest research into the cause of this morning?s fireball over Chelyabinsk

A surprise meteor strike over central Russia this morning lit up the skies, blew out windows on the ground and injured roughly 1,000 people in and around Chelyabinsk, a city of 1.1 million. The inbound object, thought to be a small asteroid, had not been discovered prior to impact. But already teams on the ground are reportedly collecting possible fragments of the meteorite, and researchers around the globe are scrambling to figure out what happened. Scientific American contacted Margaret Campbell-Brown, a professor in the Meteor Physics Group at the University of Western Ontario, to get the latest.

[An edited transcript of the interview follows.]

What do we know, as of now, about what caused the fireball over Russia this morning?
We?ve actually seen it from at least two infrasound stations. Infrasound is very low frequency sound waves, which are produced in, for example, loud explosions. There is a global network of infrasound sensors whose purpose is to detect nuclear explosions in the atmosphere. It?s part of the Comprehensive [Nuclear] Test Ban Treaty. Two of the nearest stations in this network, which were both in Russia, did detect this very large event.

So, from that, we know that the energy of the explosion was about 300 kilotons of TNT equivalent. So it was a very, very powerful explosion. It was the biggest explosion from a meteor that we?ve seen in the atmosphere since the Tunguska impact of 1908.

We know that the meteor lasted about 30 seconds. It came into the atmosphere at a very shallow angle, which is why it lasted so long. The object was moving at about 18 kilometers per second, which is about 65,000 kilometers per hour, which is typical of an asteroidal speed.

From the energy of the impact, we think that it was about 15 meters in size, so it would be the largest object to hit the Earth since the Tunguska impact, as far as we know?we haven?t recorded an object larger than that. It had a mass of probably about 7,000 metric tons, so it was a very large object.

You may have seen that the Russian Academy of Sciences issued a statement with a lower estimate for the size of the object?something in the few-meter range producing an explosion of a few kilotons.
Right. It?s the most uncertain part of the calculation, but I would be very surprised if it?s less than 100 kilotons. It was a very, very large event. And the fact that there was so much damage on the ground supports the conclusion that the energy was high. You need a lot of energy to shatter windows in the way that was seen.

Is there any reason to suspect that it was anything other than an asteroid?
An asteroid is certainly the most likely suspect. The size of it, the speed that it was going and so on, all point to an asteroid. The fact that it exploded in the atmosphere implies that it was probably a stony asteroid, maybe a chondritic type, for example, as opposed to something iron, because iron things are stronger and tend to make it to the ground, where they release their energy.

Where was most of the energy released as this object made its way through the atmosphere?
In this case the final destination, which seems to have been the largest deposit of energy, was somewhere around 15 to 20 kilometers altitude. The actual fireball probably started significantly higher than that, maybe 50 kilometers, but most of the energy was apparently deposited during that last explosion lower in the atmosphere.

Is it possible that if this meteor had hit over the ocean rather than over a populated area, we might not have known about it?
We certainly would have known about it. The CTBT, the Test Ban Treaty, constantly is monitoring for large explosions in the atmosphere, and this one was large enough that no matter where it occurred over the Earth it would have been detected by the CTBT array.

You mentioned that this event showed up in two nearby CTBT sensors. Is it possible that the explosion was picked up by other stations as well?
Not all the sensors are as straightforward to get the data from. We?re trying to get data from other sensors. It would surprise me if there wasn?t data on other sensors because this was a very powerful wave, and I would expect it to propagate a very long distance because infrasound can travel a very long way in the atmosphere. But we don?t have data from other stations yet.

How often should we expect to see an event like this?
In the 15-meter size range, we think it happens about every 50 years. It?s been more than 100 years since we?ve seen something of this size, but statistically it happens approximately every 50 years.

When you consider all the areas of the Earth that are uninhabited?the oceans, the ice caps, the deserts and so on?it?s very surprising that this happened over such a populated area. Very unlucky.

Adventures in the BJC: Part 2 - Onward State

When you last left us, we had just discovered the elusive THON salon, the original goal of our adventure. Little did we know, we had just scratched the surface of what was really going on behind the scenes of THON. We left the salon in search of some good photo ops, so we continued onto the floor crowded with increasingly delirious dancers.

_DSC1124

The floor was pretty quiet ? no band was playing, no special activities were going on ? just dancers doing their thing. Strangers were tossing beach balls back and forth, dancers were passing the time with arts and crafts on some of the high tables, and for a select few, it was breakfast time. Even when there?s nothing scheduled, there are always fun things set up on the floor, like bean bag tossing.

_DSC1129

After a few minutes of aimless wandering, we headed to one of the side entrances, to take a look behind the scenes. Everywhere you looked was in a state of organized chaos. Committee members in shirts of all colors running around with a clear purpose and intent. It was a little overwhelming. Eventually we stumbled upon something interesting.

_DSC1152

Hidden in the side alleys of backstage THON, is a video blog booth where anyone (dancers, committee members, and families) can all make their own videos ? reality TV style ? and upload them directly to YouTube. This is one of those small details of THON that goes a long way ? especially for the emotionally exhausted dancers. After hours and hours of sleep deprivation, it?s nice to have someplace to vent. If you want to try to find a familiar face, check out the THON 2013 video blog YouTube playlist.

There were a few more things we wanted to check out in the halls of the BJC, but not before we played a game of pick up beach volleyball with our PR volunteers and some random strangers.

_DSC1156

After we nearly hit someone?s grandpa in the head, we decided that the time for tomfoolery was over and continued farther down the hall. It was here that we found some inspirational wall art ? the THON family trees. Each tree branch featured a different THON child, and included a mini biography, a list of their favorite things about THON, and pictures (including a mini Mario). The trees took up a large stretch of the hallway, changing seasons as they went.

How could anything top that?

Lily McMenamy, Model, Goes Topless At Marc Jacobs Fashion Week Show (PHOTOS)

Leave it to Marc Jacobs to send off New York Fashion Week with a bang.

On Thursday evening, Marc Jacobs presented his fall collection to a massive audience at the Lexington Avenue Armory, sending his models around in luxe wool, fur, silk and knit ensembles rendered in rich hues of burgundy, navy, gray and gold.

Yet there was one model who wore very little at all: 18-year-old Lily McMenamy, daughter of legendary '90s model Kristen McMenamy, trotted down the runway wearing nothing but hot pants and elbow-length gloves. She shielded her toplessness with one delicately placed hand.

This wasn't Lily's first turn on the runway, but it was certainly her most memorable. The teen made her modeling debut at Hedi Slimane's first Saint Laurent show in September 2012 and was quickly plucked by Karl Lagerfeld to walk for Chanel, too. A shoot for T magazine qickly followed. "I feel like I?ve had a lot of experience for an 18-year-old. I grew up quite fast," Lily remarked to Into The Gloss.

Walking topless at a Marc Jacobs show might be her most unforgettable experience yet. Check out photos of Lily's major red carpet moment below.

Think of Chicago, and no doubt retired porn star Bree Olson and a certain sexual act come to mind.

No?

The new billboard at Clark and Ontario featuring Olson and the caption ??? ?Because the best job is a b--w job? ? was specifically tailored for Chicago, say the brains behind the message, the hook-up dating website ArrangementFinders.com. Olson gained mainstream fame as one of Charlie Sheen?s ?goddesses.?

?We specifically picked Chicago for this website,? said A.J. Perkins, in charge of marketing for the Toronto-based company.

The marketing folks were thinking about the high unemployment rate in the city when they came up with the catchy slogan, Perkins said. Part of the lewd phrase on the billboard is blurred out.

?We wanted to come up with a billboard that had some sort of play on the word, ?jobs,?? Perkins said.

For those who might find the billboard offensive, Perkins explains: ?I can see that opinion on it, but with something like that, it speaks to a certain audience. It speaks to men and women who aren?t looking for a traditional relationship.?

The billboard is apparently having its intended effect.

About 1,300 Chicagoans had signed up for the dating service on Feb. 5. On Feb. 12, the same day the billboard went up, another 1,900 people in the city signed up, Perkins said.

Mayor Rahm Emanuel was taken aback ? and appeared somewhat dumbfounded when asked about the racy billboard after Wednesday?s City Council meeting.

?You are a living example of why people should not have either smartphones or technology,? the mayor told a local television reporter who was holding up a picture of the racy billboard on his cellphone.

Emanuel laughed uncomfortably when asked whether the message on the billboard was an appropriate one or met his standards for Chicago.

?Obviously, it?s not one I share,? he said. ?Look, we have a First Amendment. You usually operate under it. There are certain things you say I don?t think [are] appropriate also. But that said, I?m not gonna respond to that because I haven?t seen it. You?re just reading it to me. But we do have a First Amendment, and I?ve got to take a look into it.?

Told that he might turn red from embarrassment when he does see the billboard, Emanuel replied, ?I might. But it will be for other reasons ? not that.?

Two thumbs - RP Partner Wanted

1

2

3

4

I declare a Thumb War!

Unfortunately, I don't have anyone, as of yet, to join me.

Picture this. The count down is the build up, the introduction and start. Then you have the declaration! You know something's really going on and of course, we then have the War itself. The unpredictability of who's going to conquer and squash the other thumb!

Essentially, a simple thumb war can represent a 1x1 Rp. My only problem is that I do not have the other thumb. You know when you were a kid and tried to play thumbwars with yourself? It just didn't work did it. The whole point of the game was to play against someone else, to have fun with someone else.

I'm in a very lonely spot, trying to play by myself. So I guess this is where the pitch comes in, if I haven't already made it obvious that I'm looking for a partner, well here it is:

I'm looking for a partner! Image

It's been a bit stagnant lately and I'm looking to pick it up again. In terms of RP that is. I'm juggling Uni life and all that but I miss the creativity in my life that is brought by RP. So here I am.

Now I guess comes the time to explain what RPs and topics, genres etc. I like.

Okay...

Whelp....

Let's start with that I'm a rather imaginative person and that means I don't like sticking to the norm. I get bored too easily with predictability. I want something exciting that keeps me on edge and really motivates me to reply.

I'm a bit everywhere in terms of what I like, although I will say right now that I have no interest in Manga/anime whatsoever! That includes slash, male/male, female/female things too. Just don't even go there...

Moving on, I enjoy original idea's that span from pirates to futuristic dystopian future!

In terms of the fandom world I wouldn't mind doing that either. However, in saying that I don't play canon characters.

Right, this is my list:

Castle
Doctor Who
Harry Potter
Err... I've run out of idea's at this point. But if you have a fandom in mind then don't hesitate to ask.

Genres. Okay, this is important. I do not enjoy solely a romance RP. Just does not interest me whatsoever, I just get bored and fed up. But in saying that, it doesn't mean I wouldn't like some romance to actually happen in an RP. I just don't like it being the driving force of a plot.

Love action. Give me some sword fights, shoot outs, even a mechawar! (Never actually done anything like that but it sounds good!). This includes a range of different scenarios that can be concocted, we just need to devise.

Even the good ol' drama is fun.

Let's go adventuring, battle dragons, start rebellions, retrieve ancient artefacts! So many ideas for this one.

Can you believe it? You've just read all my rambling! And if you are interested I expect you're reading this. So, what conclusion did you come to by the end of this? I'm hoping it's some sort of thoughts ranging from Wow! to what is this crazy woman on about?

Either way all I ask is that if you are keen PM me.

Hopefully, I'll be hearing from you soon.

Cheers,

Adantas. Image

P.S. I'm all about the fun, that's the important part and as you see from my quirkiness in this whole post I like to be a bit silly. Also, I'm looking for someone to be around for a while and won't disappear on me.

Thanks again!

Hang on, I just want to reach 600 hundred words. COMPLETED!

4 Ala football players charged with fraud, robbery

(AP) ? Online jail records show four University of Alabama football players have been arrested on charges including credit card fraud and robbery.

Records posted on the Tuscaloosa Sheriff's Department website show running back Brent Calloway was arrested Monday on a charge of fraudulent use of a credit card. Linebackers D.J. Pettway and Tyler Hayes were charged with second-degree robbery. Defensive back Eddie Williams was charged with both fraudulent use of a credit card and second-degree robbery.

The online records also show that Williams was arrested Sunday on a charge of carrying a pistol without a permit.

The website did not show whether they had attorneys. All had been released from jail by Tuesday morning.

A university spokeswoman did not immediately return a message seeking more information, and campus police referred questions to university relations.

All four players were backups last season for Alabama, which has won two straight national titles and three of the past four.

Nebraska Wrestling Coach Hopes IOC Reconsiders Recommendation to Drop Wrestling from Olympics

IOC leaders dropped wrestling from the Olympic program on Tuesday, a surprise decision that removes one of the oldest Olympic sports from the 2020 Games.

The IOC executive board decided to retain modern pentathlon -- the event considered most at risk -- and remove wrestling instead from its list of 25 "core sports." The IOC board acted after reviewing the 26 sports on the current Olympic program. Eliminating one sport allows the International Olympic Committee to add a new sport to the program later this year.

Wrestling, which combines freestyle and Greco-Roman events, goes back to the inaugural modern Olympics in Athens in 1896.

Statement from Nebraska Wrestling Head Coach Mark Manning on the IOC?s recommendation to drop wrestling from the 2020 Olympics:

?The wrestling community is shocked and disappointed by the IOC?s recommendation to eliminate wrestling from the 2020 Olympic Games. The sport of wrestling has a great history in the Olympics dating back to the inaugural Games in Athens in 1896."

?Removing wrestling from the Olympics would have a far-reaching impact on our sport. It not only greatly affects our current Olympic athletes and future Olympians, but it would also damage the sport at the collegiate, high school and youth levels. Wrestling is the sixth-most popular boys? high school sport in the United States with more than 275,000 participants, and at the collegiate level we have sold out the NCAA Championships the past four years, so the interest and passion for the sport is widespread. Hopefully, the IOC will take into account the impact of this decision on the American and international wrestling communities, and re-consider when they meet in May.?

Is it time for a non-European pope?

With the surprise announcement that Pope Benedict XVI will resign at the end of this month, many in the so-called ?global south? are hopeful that a new pope might finally hail from Asia, Africa, or Latin America.

Latin America is home to 40 percent of the world?s 1 billion Catholics: Brazil is the largest Catholic country in the world, and Mexico is the second largest.

There has never been a non-European pope, and naming a leader from Latin America, Africa, or Asia would be considered a radical new direction for the Eurocentric Vatican. But it would also reflect a new, and to many a long overdue, pragmatism within the institution. While nearly three-quarters of Latin Americans identify as Catholic, for example, only a quarter of Europeans do.

After the death of Pope John Paul II in 2005, similar expectations for a non-European pope simmered. And when Pope Benedict, a German, was selected for the post, a sense that the church headquarters does not understand the reality of today's faithful was palpable in places such as Latin America. But Andrew Chesnut, the Bishop Walter F. Sullivan Chair in Catholic Studies at Virginia Commonwealth University, says he believes the chances of having a pope from the global south now ?are stronger than ever.?

While many argue that the next pope should hail from western Europe, precisely to revitalize the epic lost ground of the church there, he says, ?the greater realization is that you must go where the future lies.

?The future of the global church is in Africa, parts of Asia, and Latin America,? Mr. Chesnut says.

'RENEW' FAITH

While Catholics have been leaving the church in Europe, numbers are still strong in Latin America. Seventy-three percent of the region is Catholic, according to the Pew Research Center.

But Catholicism still faces a test in this part of the world, as many have left faith altogether or, in many countries in Central America and Brazil, joined a growing movement of Protestantism, especially of Pentecostals. In Honduras, Guatemala, and El Salvador, for example, Prot?es?tants represent more than 35 percent of the population.

On a sunny Monday morning in Mexico City, Liliana Lopez, a lifelong Catholic, was heading home from her morning walk when she saw her local congregation completely empty. ?How sad it is that theaters and movies are filled but churches are empty,? Ms. Lopez says.

?Having a pope from this part of the world could help renew our faith. We need an extraordinary rejuvenation [in the church].?

Pope Benedict was hailed, upon his selection, by conservative Catholics across the globe while liberal Catholics worried about him taking a hard line. In Latin America, while issues such as gay marriage and abortion have come to the fore in urban pockets, posing a problem for local Catholic leaders, such ?culture wars? have not yet created the wedges with the church that have formed in the US and western Europe.

But Latin America was disappointed in the choice of a more staid leader, who lacked the charisma of his predecessor, John Paul II. The widely loved pope visited Mexico five times in the 20th century, each time amassing huge crowds. Benedict?s visits to the region, most recently in March last year to Mexico and Cuba, energized the deeply faithful but not the population at large.

Ms. Lopez looks up at a portrait of John Paul II that hangs in her Mexico City church. ?We just need a pope with charisma, even if he?s not Mexican, someone who can recuperate our faith.?

CONTENDERS?

In recent months, there have been hints that a next pope might be a Latino. For example, Archbishop Gerhard M?ller, head of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, said in December: "I know a lot of bishops and cardinals from Latin America who could take responsibility for the universal Church,? reports Reuters. "The universal Church teaches that Christianity isn't centered on Europe."

Some of the frontrunners could be Odilo Scherer, archbishop of the diocese of Sao Paolo, Brazil, or Leonardo Sandri, who heads the Vatican department for Eastern Churches, and is Italian-Argentine. There are also candidates touted from Ghana, the Philippines, the US, and Europe.

Brenda Car?ran???za, a religious studies expert at the Pontif?cia Uni?ver??sidade Cat?lica de Campinas in Brazil, says that it would be symbolically important for a new pope to hail from Latin America, since it?s the ?huge bastion of Catholics in the world,? Ms. Carranza says. But in reality, it might not make much of a difference for the continent.

Factions of the church in Latin America were at a divide with the Vatican in the 1980s, over the left-leaning liberation theology, which centered on social justice but that was accused of promoting Marxist politics.

A Catholic leader with such leanings wouldn?t be considered, and the problems that are so stubborn here ? such as poverty, corruption, and crime ? would take a backseat to what Rome considers a priority, Carranza says. ?I think a pope from Latin America with thinking aligned with Rome would not make much of a difference,? she says. ?They will be preoccupied with what Rome is preoccupied with? numbers, problems with priests, priest training.?

But it could make a difference for the way Catholicism is practiced, giving more of a role to lay movements that are fertile in Latin America, notably the Catholic charismatic renewal, says Dr. Chesnut. It is a Catholic version of Pentecostalism ? notably animated services and spirited music that speaks to Latin American sensibilities.

?I think the Vatican has seen charismatic renewal as their greatest hope in competing with surging Pentecostalism not just in Latin America but in Africa and Asia too,? he says.

A pope from this part of the world would be a significant first, but Chesnut says that it also would show the institutions? pragmatism, underscored in and of itself in the resignation of Benedict. He?s the first pope in 600 years to resign from the post.

In a statement, the pope said in order to govern "...both strength of mind and body are necessary, strength which in the last few months, has deteriorated in me to the extent that I have had to recognize my incapacity to adequately fulfill the ministry entrusted to me.

"For this reason, and well aware of the seriousness of this act, with full freedom I declare that I renounce the ministry of Bishop of Rome, Successor of Saint Peter," he said.

The resignation sets the stage for a new pope to be selected in March.
