Why Chris Messina Leaves Google for NeonMob?

#ChrisMessina #leaves #Google for #NeonMob. The man was a genius for he brought us the by now ubiquitous hashtag feature that allows conversations to occur online in a specific # trend. Chris Messina had led a modest existence at Google despite his innovative invention which has become universal in its online scope. Six years ago he devised the net tool that was to achieve so much popularity. Ever since then conversations can occur in groups online without any hitches. The man had been concentrating on design and other aspects of the web at Google after that period of creativity. Redesigning was the main field of Chris. Some of Google?s prominent features such as brand badges, profiles and the +1 button were all products of his extremely fertile mind.

He was also responsible for the Google Developers knowledge base. However, after three years of service, Chris feels he should move on to more adventurous avenues. Seven days from now he will be paying NeonMob a visit. The art house is where he wants to restart his passionate exploration of creative technology. Chris is going to be creating a community at the new set up that he will be joining soon. Chris was a daring developer and UX designer at Google. He wants to expand his repertoire and find new channels of creative and artistic growth. And he is the sort of person who wants to test the limits of human ingenuity.?

Chris states in his blog that, "Next week I'll begin work at a 6-person startup based in San Francisco called NeonMob (sign up here!). I'll be focused on building a community and growing the service, which I believe is building an important, new platform for digital creatives and art enthusiasts."

Why Chris left Google for a really small start-up? Probably for #toTheFuture. He gives his opinion on this. He said, "I?m super positive about the future of Google+ and Google, and have a great amount of hope in the increasing role that design leadership is playing across the company ? and it was time for me to try my hand at something a little smaller and closer to a few dormant passions: art and collecting!"

Sri Lanka eyes South Asian hub with Chinese mega port - report

A $500 million Chinese-built port opens on Monday in Sri Lanka, giving Beijing a vital foothold on the world?s busiest international shipping lane as it seeks to secure maritime supply routes.

The massive terminal in Colombo is located mid-way on the lucrative east-west sea route and has facilities on a par with Singapore and Dubai.

The Colombo International Container Terminal (CICT), which is 85 per cent owned by the state-run China Merchant Holdings International, is designed to handle mega ships -- a first for Sri Lanka which is aiming to become the region?s shipping hub.

The involvement of such a large Chinese company appears to conform to a pattern by Beijing after it sealed a deal in January to acquire the Pakistani port of Gwadar at a time when it is also building a $14 million ?dry port? in the Nepalese city of Larcha, near Tibet.

Chinese loans and expertise were also instrumental in the construction of a new $450 million deep-sea port at the southern Sri Lankan city of Hambantota which opened in June 2012.

Independent shipping expert, Rohan Masakorala, said the new terminal made economic sense for China to tap in to the growing South Asian container cargo and gave Beijing a foothold along a strategic sea route.

?Terminal investments are a good business which can give a very good return,? said Masakorala, a former secretary-general of the Singapore-based Asian Shippers Council.

?Through this investment, China is also securing the safety and efficiency of their main supply chain.?

Masakorala, who heads the Shippers? Academy Colombo, said about half of all world sea trade passed through the east-west shipping route and a presence at a mid-way point along that gives China a commanding position.

?For China to maintain economic growth at home, they also need to go out and secure their supply routes. In that sense, coming to Colombo is a strategic commercial investment.?

The Chinese investment in Sri Lanka, which is under pressure from Western powers and India over its human rights record, has raised fears in New Delhi about Beijing?s influence in the neighbourhood.

Priyath Bandu Wickrama, chairman of the state-run Sri Lanka Ports Authority (SLPA), insisted that India had nothing to fear from the new Colombo port and could in fact be a major beneficiary.

?We will not allow any military base at our ports nor will we allow them to e used for any strategic military purpose by anyone,? Wickrama said.

Wickrama said shippers in India could save up to four days by routing their cargo through Sri Lanka rather than using Singapore or Dubai.

?Earlier, Indians along the east coast had to send their cargo to Singapore if they wanted to catch a mega ship going West. Now these mega ships will be going through Colombo and picking up Indian cargo,? he told AFP.

?That saves time and a lot of money.?

The two major ports of south India, the Port of Cochin and the Port of Tuticorin, are too shallow for mega vessels such as the world?s largest container ship, the MV. Maersk Mc-Kinney Moller.

Saliya Senanayake from the London-based Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport says that ?India is about five to six years behind Sri Lanka when it comes to port infrastructure?.

Sri Lanka has been an important stop in the ancient Silk Sea Route and today hundreds of ships pass its southern coast daily while plying the world?s busiest international shipping lane.

With a capacity of over 18,000 containers, the M.V. Maersk Mc-Kinney Moller, which was commissioned about two weeks ago is expected to make up a fleet of 20 mega ships in the next two years plying the East-West route.

The SLPA is pouring millions of dollars into infrastructure around the island and says it is on course to increase container handling capacity by 1.6 million containers to 6.4 million by April.

It hopes to have a container capacity of 10 million by 2020, while revenue is forecast to triple to one billion dollars by 2020.

Hambantota, which is just 12 kilometres away from the East-West sea lane, is being promoted as a key service centre and industrial port where large ships can re-fuel or take on fresh food.

In April, Colombo?s port is due to open another mega terminal just next to the Chinese-managed CICT. The new addition will initially be able to handle about 800,000 containers a year, according to the SLPA.

Professor Tsz Leung Yip, head of the International Centre for Maritime Studies at Hong Kong Polytechnic University, said Chinese expertise coupled with Colombo?s strategic location would make Sri Lanka a key stop-over for international carriers who want to avoid the threat posed by Somali pirates operating off the Gulf of Aden.

?In the presence of Somalia pirates, it is safer for ships (from the Far East to Europe) to stop over at Sri Lanka and head to Cape of Good Hope, without calling at Dubai port,? he told AFP. - AFP

Conservative Catholics, the GOP, and the Pope

Chastity and charity: Conservative Catholics emphasize the former at the expense of the latter, and liberal Catholics vice versa. That?s the popular wisdom, which, however, reflects a misapprehension of facts on the ground. Conservatives in general have been shown to give a larger portion of their income to charity, and Catholic paragons of charity (e.g., Dorothy Day, Mother Teresa) are typically conservative in their respect for traditional Christian mores.

The dichotomy between ?charity? and ?chastity,? then, is false, but it?s clear, so it persists. When applied to American politics, it leads to the clich? that every voting Catholic faces a dilemma: Republicans are right on the social issues but are social Darwinists, while Democrats are wrong on the social issues but have an agenda that dovetails nicely with the social gospel. Under analysis, the stereotypes collapse (for example, on abortion, it?s the Democratic party that comes closer to social Darwinism), but for the most part we find them convenient and so take care not to analyze them much.

Given that so far in his pontificate he has had more to say about the poor than about abortion, same-sex marriage, or other culture-war issues, Pope Francis lends the impression that, in American terms, he?s liberal. Ross Douthat says that this can be helpful in dissuading conservative American Catholics from a too-reflexive attachment to the Republican party, and he quotes R. R. Reno on the dangers to be avoided in that regard. First, Reno explains, ?religious people . . .?could easily become a taken-for-granted base largely irrelevant to the party?s larger policy debate.? The other danger is that, if the religious bind themselves too tightly to the GOP and the GOP falls, they?ll fall with it: ?Religion, especially orthodox Christianity, may end up implicated in the inevitable failures and corruptions of the Republican party? and ?recapitulat[e] in some way the disastrous alliances of the Catholic Church with the European right in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.?

Those warnings of Reno?s are cogent in themselves, but the premise that Douthat rests?them on?is questionable. Catholics who vote Republican are not necessarily allergic to Francis?s enthusiasm for the social gospel. Many applaud it and have their reasons for thinking that Republican economic policies are good for the poor: Republicans encourage the creation of wealth, which tends to drive out poverty, and Republicans like to cut taxes, which exert downward pressure on charitable giving. Granted, those dependent clauses are largely inaudible to opponents of the Republican message ? all they hear is ?Give me more? and ?Make me give less? ? but most conservative Catholics I know comprehend the message in full and conclude that the economic ideas most supportive of Catholic social teaching involve free markets and limited government.

Complicating matters further is that conservative Catholics are predisposed to appreciate the correlation between wealth and the formation of traditional intact families, so that, in their view, pocketbook issues and the social issues form (to borrow a phrase) a seamless garment. A child should have a father because to have a father is a unique good and, by the way, the kid is more likely to enjoy middle-class comfort now and in the future if his father is present.

Fatherlessness underpins a great many social and economic ills, and government can do less to enable it. It can curb entitlement programs whereby the state, assuming the role of the adult male in the household, supplies ?bureaugamy? where healthy marriage is lacking. But that?s it. The etiology of the problem is primarily cultural, and so will be the solution. If conservative Catholics loosen their ties to the Republican party, it will be not because the pope, to whom they are loyal, is urging them to care for the poor but because they have decided to go easy on politics, at least for a while, in order to concentrate on the culture, which they?ve been losing for generations. It may well be generations before their labor in that realm bears much fruit again ? which is to say, not in their lifetimes, but in the long run.

Douthat adds that, if conservative Catholics find themselves disagreeing with Pope Francis, that will be good in that ?it might help cure them/us of the temptation toward papolatry.? But one man?s papolatry is another man?s unfeigned filial piety. The need to express it is greater than the availability of adult males to receive it, so it?s little wonder that whoever is elected to wear the white cassock and zuchetto, those evocative symbols of the ?papa? (the Latin word for ?pope? and, by way of the Greek ?pappas,? a familiar, affectionate term for ?father?), is ipso facto the object of so much adulation. Note that the rise of the pope as rock star, beginning early in the pontificate of John Paul II, coincides with a rise in single motherhood, the other side of that coin being a decline in the incidence of fatherhood.

Old School RPer here!

Hey everyone! Just thought I'd introduce myself a bit.

I cut my teeth back in the early nineties on AD&D 1st Ed. Then started into IRC and Yahoo chat to role play. Bounced around the internet a bit, played a bunch of white wolf stuff, all the 3.x editions of D&D and Pathfinder. Recently picked up Savage Worlds, Dungeon Crawl Classics (the new stand alone rpg) and Castles and Crusades.

I've got an itch to run either DCC or C&C. I want to merge my old school fondness with some good RP! My face to face group would get into it a bit, but its mainly a chance for us all just to get together and catch up. That's fine, but the role play itch, it must be scratched! And it must be scratched with something which does one dice four! :D

U.S. issues global travel alert over al-Qaida threat

WASHINGTON (AP) -- The United States has issued a global travel alert because of an al-Qaida terrorist threat.

The State Department says the potential for terrorism is particularly strong in the Middle East and North Africa. It says an attack could occur or come from the Arabian Peninsula.

The department says in a statement that al-Qaida and its affiliated organizations "continue to plan terrorist attacks both in the region and beyond."

The travel alert comes a day after the U.S. announced that it would shutter its embassies and consulates throughout the Muslim world on Sunday, and possibly longer.

THIS IS A BREAKING NEWS UPDATE. Check back soon for further information. AP's earlier story is below.

The United States is closing its embassies and consulates throughout the Muslim world on Sunday after receiving an unspecified threat, officials said.

The threat was linked to al-Qaida and focused on the Middle East and Central Asia, said Rep. Ed Royce, R-Calif., chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee.

State Department officials said Thursday they were acting out of an "abundance of caution."

Spokeswoman Marie Harf cited information indicating a threat to U.S. facilities overseas and said some diplomatic facilities may stay closed for more than a day.

Sunday is a workday in the Muslim world. American diplomatic missions in Europe, Latin America and many other places are closed on Sunday.

Royce said Friday he supported the State Department decision to "protect our personnel on the ground."

The State Department issued a major warning last year informing American diplomatic facilities across the Muslim world about potential violence connected to the anniversary of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.

Dozens of American installations were besieged by protests over an anti-Islam video made by an American resident.

In Benghazi, Libya, the U.S. ambassador and three other Americans were killed when militants assaulted a diplomatic post. The administration no longer says that attack was related to the demonstrations.

What happens next to Italy's celebrity convict?

ROME (AP) ? Now that Silvio Berlusconi's tax fraud conviction and four-year prison sentence have been upheld by Italy's highest court, key questions remain about what will happen next to the former Italian premier. At his age, how much of that sentence will he actually have to serve? Will he do that in prison or at one of his villas? With he be barred from leaving Italy and lose his Senate seat?

Here are some answers.

Q: When will the cell bars slam behind him?

A: Berlusconi is highly unlikely to do a day behind bars, and that's not because he is one of the country's richest men. That's because of Italian law. For example, his four-year prison sentence is automatically reduced to one year because of a law mandating that three years be shaved off sentences to reduce prison overcrowding. Berlusconi has long worked hard to appear younger, including eyelid tightening and hair transplants. But he will turn 77 in September, and most Italian convicts 70 or older are eligible to serve their sentences at home.

First-time offenders with relatively short sentences are eligible to avoid prison by doing social services such as picking up litter in a park or serving meals at homes for the elderly. Berlusconi will be given this option.

The billionaire media mogul has several homes in Italy: a sprawling seaside estate on Sardinia's Emerald Coast, a villa near Milan where he used to hold his infamous "bunga bunga suppers" with young women, and a rented palazzo in Rome a short stroll away from the office where he served as premier three times.

Berlusconi will decide whether to do social services or stay at home. If he makes the latter choice, judicial officials would take part in the decision about which dwelling that would be.

Q: When does he start serving his sentence?

A: It will take weeks for Berlusconi to be formally notified of his options since judicial offices are on vacation now. And when he is, he'll have a month to make up his mind. That means he is unlikely to start serving his sentence until mid-October at the earliest. And if he opts to do social services, it could take months to find an approved organization that would accept him.

Q. Berlusconi is fond of jetting away for the weekend with officials such as Russian leader Vladimir Putin. How will Italian authorities stop him from leaving the country?

A. Italian convicts serving their sentences at home are required to sign in at a local police station on a regular basis. Electronic leg bracelets aren't being used in Italy. Convicts' passports are seized, but former premiers often have a diplomatic passport. It wasn't immediately clear if seizing Berlusconi's diplomatic passport would require a special action by Italy's foreign ministry.

Q. Can Berlusconi remain a politician?

A. Thursday's high court ruling upheld a ban on his holding or running for public office. A lower court had meted out a five-year ban, but the high court ruled that the wrong law had been applied in determining the length of the ban and ordered another court to recalculate it, using a law stipulating that bans can last from one to three years.

Q. So when can he be a senator again or run for a fourth term as premier?

A. Berlusconi remains a senator for now. It will take months, maybe more, for a Milan court to decide the length of his ban from public office. Then the Senate must be officially notified. After that, a parliamentary commission will discuss what to do and hold a public hearing which Berlusconi and his lawyer can attend. After that, the full Senate votes. If the Senate votes to defy the ban, the Cassation Court can challenge that, taking the question of which power prevails ? legislative or judicial ? to Italy's constitutional court.

Snaptee, The App That Makes Designing And Ordering Custom T-Shirts Easy, Officially Launches With New Editing Features

Snaptee logoSnaptee, the custom T-shirt iOS app that we profiled back in February, is launching to the public today with a fresh look and more options, including a women’s tee and upgraded shipping. Snaptee’s first Android app will also be available by the end of this month. The app was created to make designing and ordering custom T-shirts as easy as applying a filter to a smartphone photo. Snaptee’s updated interface features Instagram integration, a wide choice of fonts and colors, custom filters and design templates. Finished designs can be printed onto 100% organic cotton T-shirts for $19.99 each and shipped anywhere in the world. Regular shipping is $5 worldwide, while the new upgraded shipping option is $26. Users can also sell their designs for a 10% commission per order. “We’ve gotten rid of the clutter of the old layout and background and have gone with a minimalist, clean look that makes both designing and exploring designs much more enjoyable and aesthetically appealing,” chief communications officer Catherine Shao told me by email. “The icons and buttons have been adjusted (bigger!) and simplified, making the user?s progression through the design and ordering process much more seamless and self-explanatory.” Don’t feel like designing a shirt from scratch? The Remix button allows users to “unlock” their designs so they can be altered by other people. Albums by seven Instagram photographers from around the world are currently available as starting points for designs by other users. Shao says the startup wants users to see Snaptee as a community instead of just an editing tool. “We envision Remix growing and playing a part in friends and collaborators designing together in Snaptee,” she says. “To us, a T-shirt is more than just an article of clothing, it’s a blank canvas for expression.” Since its soft launch earlier this year, Snaptee built up a base of over 130,000 users in 45 countries, including its key markets of the U.S., Japan and Germany. The app has been used to create more than 160,000 unique T-shirt designs. Shao says Snaptee is now focused on finding partnership opportunities with other companies and brands and plans to target Australia, the UK, South Korea and Southeast Asia as their next core markets.
